A tender and flavorful slow cooker pulled pork recipe with honey BBQ sauce, perfect for parties and easy to prepare. The pork is fall-apart tender and pairs wonderfully with soft slider buns.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 lbs pork shoulder (pork butt), well-marbled
  • 1/3 cup (113g) honey
  • 1 cup (240 ml) BBQ sauce (smoky, thick, e.g., Stubbs or Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp (25g) brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp (7g) smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp (2.5g) garlic powder
  • 1 tsp (2.5g) onion powder
  • 1 tsp (5g) salt
  • 1/2 tsp (1g) black pepper
  • 2024 slider buns (soft and slightly sweet, e.g., King’s Hawaiian)
  • Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, sliced jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder, leaving some for flavor. Pat dry with paper towels. (10 minutes)
  2. In a bowl, whisk together honey, BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, yellow mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth. (5 minutes)
  3. Rub the pork shoulder all over with a pinch of salt and pepper. Place it in the slow cooker. Pour the sauce evenly over the top, covering every part. (5 minutes)
  4. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours until the meat easily pulls apart with a fork. (8-10 hours on low)
  5. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place on a cutting board or platter. Use two forks or tongs to shred the meat into thin pieces. Scrape the slow cooker insert to collect juices and stir back into the pork. (10 minutes)
  6. Lightly toast the slider buns if desired. Pile on a generous scoop of pulled pork, drizzle with extra sauce, and add optional toppings like coleslaw or pickles. (10 minutes)
  7. Arrange sliders on a platter and serve warm immediately.

Notes

If the sauce is thin after cooking, simmer some liquid in a saucepan to thicken before mixing back in. Lightly toasting buns helps prevent sogginess. You can use sugar-free BBQ sauce or pork loin for a leaner version. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. Leftovers keep 3-4 days refrigerated or freeze up to 3 months (without buns).
