A quick and easy smoky blackberry sangria with a dramatic dry ice fog effect, perfect for Halloween parties and themed events. This cocktail balances smoky mezcal, fresh blackberries, and citrus for a crowd-pleasing, mystical drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot)
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries, washed
  • 2 oz smoky mezcal
  • 1 oz orange liqueur (Triple Sec or Cointreau)
  • 1 medium fresh orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 small lemon, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp simple syrup
  • 1 smoked cinnamon stick (optional)
  • ½ cup club soda or sparkling water
  • Small chunks of dry ice (for fog effect, handled with gloves and tongs)

Instructions

  1. Rinse 1 cup of fresh blackberries gently and slice the orange and lemon into thin rounds (about 1/8-inch thick).
  2. In a large pitcher, pour 1 bottle (750 ml) of dry red wine. Add 2 oz smoky mezcal and 1 oz orange liqueur. Stir gently to combine for about 1 minute.
  3. Add the blackberries, orange slices, lemon slices, and smoked cinnamon stick. Stir lightly to distribute evenly.
  4. Pour in 2 tablespoons of simple syrup and stir again to dissolve the sweetness. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  5. Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, ideally 2-3 hours to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Just before serving, add ½ cup of club soda or sparkling water and stir gently to preserve bubbles.
  7. Using gloves and tongs, place small chunks of dry ice into a separate container near the sangria pitcher to create a smoky fog effect. Pour sangria into glasses and serve alongside the fog. Never drop dry ice directly into the sangria glass.

Notes

Use fresh blackberries for best flavor; frozen blackberries can be used and help keep the sangria chilled longer. Always handle dry ice with gloves and tongs and never ingest or place dry ice directly in the drink. Chill sangria for at least 1 hour for best flavor. Adjust sweetness with simple syrup to taste. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute red wine with black grape juice and mezcal with smoky tea or liquid smoke.
