Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds chicken wings, tips removed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅓ cup honey (about 113g)
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce (120ml), tangy preferred
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons hot sauce (e.g., Frank’s RedHot)
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Optional: pinch of chili flakes
  • Optional: maple syrup instead of honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and set the rack in the middle position.
  2. Pat chicken wings dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  3. Toss wings in a large bowl with olive oil, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder until evenly coated.
  4. Arrange wings in a single layer on a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet, leaving space between each wing.
  5. Bake for 35-40 minutes, flipping halfway through, until skin is golden and juices run clear.
  6. While wings bake, combine honey, BBQ sauce, hot sauce, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir gently until warmed and slightly thickened (3-5 minutes). Do not boil.
  7. Remove wings from oven and brush each wing generously with the spicy honey glaze.
  8. Switch oven to broil on high and broil wings for 3-4 minutes, watching closely to caramelize the glaze without burning.
  9. Remove wings from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow glaze to set and flavors to meld.

Notes

Pat wings dry thoroughly for crisp skin. Do not overcrowd wings on the rack to avoid sogginess. Watch broiler carefully to prevent burning. You can adjust spice levels by varying hot sauce and cayenne pepper. For gluten-free, use certified gluten-free BBQ sauce. Wings can be grilled instead of baked for 20-25 minutes over medium heat, then glazed and grilled a few minutes more.
