Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (960 ml) spiced apple cider
  • 2 cups (480 ml) orange juice
  • 1 cup (240 ml) pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) honey or maple syrup
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large orange, thinly sliced into rounds
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries (optional)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep your fruit: Wash the orange and apple thoroughly. Slice the orange into thin rounds (about 1/4-inch thick), then cut each round in half. Slice the apple into thin wedges, removing the core and seeds. If using cranberries, rinse them and pick out any that are soft or bruised.
  2. Mix the liquid base: In a large pitcher, combine the spiced apple cider, orange juice, and pineapple juice. Stir gently with a wooden spoon until well blended.
  3. Sweeten it up: In a small bowl, mix the honey or maple syrup with 2 tablespoons of warm water. Stir until the sweetener is completely dissolved, then pour it into the pitcher.
  4. Add the spices: Drop in the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and whole cloves. Sprinkle in the ground nutmeg. Give everything another gentle stir.
  5. Add the fruit: Gently slide the orange slices, apple wedges, and cranberries into the pitcher. Do not stir too vigorously.
  6. Chill: Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. For best results, let it sit for 2-3 hours.
  7. Serve: When ready to serve, give the pitcher one last gentle stir. Pour into glasses filled with ice, making sure each glass gets a few pieces of fruit. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig if desired.

Notes

For best flavor, let the sangria sit for 2-3 hours before serving. The spices will continue to infuse overnight, but remove whole spices after 12 hours to prevent overpowering. If making ahead, add fruit slices about an hour before serving to keep them fresh. For a warm version, combine all ingredients in a slow cooker on low for 2-3 hours.
