3-ingredient steak marinade - featured image

A quick and simple marinade using just soy sauce, honey, and garlic that tenderizes and flavors steak perfectly for grilling. Ideal for last-minute BBQs or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup (120 ml) soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (40 grams) honey
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together ½ cup (120 ml) soy sauce, 2 tablespoons (40 grams) honey, and 3 cloves of minced garlic until the honey is completely dissolved (about 2 minutes).
  2. Place 1 to 1½ pounds (450-680 grams) of steak (ribeye, sirloin, or flank) into a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the meat, ensuring it is fully coated. Seal and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, up to 4 hours (2 hours recommended for deeper flavor).
  3. About 20 minutes before cooking, preheat grill to medium-high heat (around 400°F / 200°C). Clean and oil the grates.
  4. Remove steaks from marinade and let excess drip off. Pat dry lightly with paper towels to avoid flare-ups.
  5. Grill steaks for 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare (internal temperature 130°F / 54°C), adjusting time for thickness and preferred doneness. Flip only once using tongs.
  6. Transfer steaks to a plate and tent loosely with foil. Rest for 5-7 minutes to allow juices to redistribute.
  7. Slice against the grain and serve immediately with your favorite sides.

Notes

Do not marinate longer than 4 hours to avoid meat becoming mushy. Pat steaks dry before grilling to prevent flare-ups. Use a meat thermometer for perfect doneness. Rest steak after grilling for juicy results. Optional additions include black pepper, apple cider vinegar, crushed red pepper flakes, fresh herbs, or lime juice.
