These homemade chocolate-dipped candied orange slices are a lifesaver when you need something impressive without the stress. With just three main ingredients and about 30 minutes of active time, you can create beautiful, crowd-pleasing treats that look like they came from a boutique bakery.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium oranges (preferably organic navel oranges)
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 8 ounces (225g) dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa content)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or shortening (optional, for shine)
  • Flaky sea salt, crushed pistachios, or white chocolate drizzle (optional toppings)

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly under warm water. Slice into even rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. You should get about 8-10 slices per orange.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups sugar and 1 cup water. Stir gently over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Bring to a gentle simmer (tiny bubbles, not a rolling boil), about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Carefully lay the orange slices in the syrup in a single layer. Reduce heat to low-medium and let them simmer gently for 45-50 minutes. Flip gently every 10-15 minutes with a slotted spoon. Do not let it boil hard.
  4. Check for doneness: the rinds should look translucent and the white pith should be almost glassy. A fork should pierce the rind easily. If the syrup gets too dark or thick, add a splash of water.
  5. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the candied slices to a wire rack placed over a baking sheet. Let them cool and dry for at least 2 hours, or overnight. They should be tacky but not sticky-wet.
  6. Chop the dark chocolate into small, even pieces. Place in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and glossy. If using, stir in 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Alternatively, use a double boiler.
  7. Once the orange slices are dry, dip each one halfway into the melted chocolate. Let excess drip off, then place on parchment paper. If adding toppings, sprinkle them on while the chocolate is still wet.
  8. Let the dipped slices sit at room temperature until the chocolate is firm, about 30-45 minutes. For faster setting, refrigerate for 15 minutes, but let them come to room temperature before serving.

Notes

Don’t rush the drying step—if the slices are damp, the chocolate won’t stick. Candy the oranges the day before and let them dry overnight for best results. Keep the syrup at a gentle simmer to avoid tough pith. Leftover syrup can be used to sweeten cocktails, pancakes, or yogurt. Store slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months.
