A simple and delicious camping dessert made with bananas, chocolate chips, and foil, cooked over a campfire for a warm, gooey treat.

Ingredients

  • Bananas (ripe but firm)
  • Chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
  • Aluminum foil (heavy-duty)
  • Optional: mini marshmallows
  • Optional: chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, peanuts, or almonds)
  • Optional: cinnamon or shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Using a sharp knife, slice each banana lengthwise down the middle, but don’t cut all the way through to create a pocket.
  2. Gently open the slit and stuff with about 1/4 cup (45g) of chocolate chips. Add any optional extras like mini marshmallows or nuts if desired.
  3. Place each stuffed banana on a square of heavy-duty foil. Fold the foil around the banana securely, making a tight packet to hold in heat and moisture.
  4. Carefully place the foil packets on hot embers or near glowing coals (not direct flame). Cook for 10-15 minutes, turning halfway through with tongs.
  5. Carefully unwrap a packet (watch for steam!) and test the banana’s softness with a fork. If it needs more time, rewrap and return to the coals for a few more minutes.
  6. Serve warm straight from the foil or transfer to a plate with a spoon.

Notes

Use ripe but firm bananas to avoid mushiness. Cook over glowing embers, not direct flames, and turn packets regularly to prevent burning. Double-wrap foil packets to avoid leaks and ash contamination. Can be baked in a 350°F oven for 12-15 minutes or grilled on a barbecue.
