A quick and simple taco recipe using just five ingredients, perfect for busy weeknights or beginner cooks. Ready in 20 minutes, these tacos deliver bold flavor with minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 packet (about 1.25 oz / 35g) taco seasoning mix
  • 8 flour or corn taco shells
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes.
  2. Add a teaspoon of oil or a small pat of butter to the skillet. Sauté the finely chopped onion for 3-4 minutes until translucent and fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook for 6-7 minutes until browned with no pink remaining. Drain excess liquid if needed.
  4. Sprinkle the taco seasoning evenly over the cooked beef. Add 1/3 cup (80ml) water and stir well. Let simmer for 3-4 minutes until the mixture thickens and coats the beef.
  5. Warm the taco shells according to package instructions (about 2-3 minutes in a 350°F oven or in a dry skillet).
  6. Assemble tacos by spooning the seasoned beef into each shell and sprinkling shredded cheddar cheese on top to melt slightly. Optionally add lime juice or fresh cilantro.
  7. Serve immediately with optional toppings like salsa, sour cream, or avocado slices.

Notes

If beef seems dry after seasoning, add a splash more water or a teaspoon of olive oil. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure proper browning. Store-bought taco seasoning varies in saltiness; start with half the packet and adjust to taste. For gluten-free, use corn shells and check seasoning labels. For dairy-free, omit cheese or use plant-based alternatives.
