Crispy Mummy Hot Dogs - featured image

A spooky and delicious Halloween snack featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky puff pastry with melty cheddar cheese, perfect for parties and family fun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed but cold
  • 8 standard all-beef hot dogs
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (for eyes)
  • Mustard or ketchup for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Pat hot dogs dry with a paper towel to ensure crispiness.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out pastry sheets to 1/8 inch thickness and cut into 1-inch wide strips.
  4. Wrap a pastry strip around a hot dog, leaving a small gap. Sprinkle shredded cheese into the gap and fold the pastry over to seal.
  5. Wind additional pastry strips around the hot dog, leaving small gaps to create the ‘mummy’ look. Do not wrap too tightly.
  6. Dot two spots on the front with egg wash and press sesame seeds into the dots to form eyes.
  7. Place mummies on the baking sheet, leaving an inch of space between each. Brush tops with remaining egg wash.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until pastry is golden brown and puffed, and cheese is bubbling.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep ingredients cold until baking to ensure the pastry stays flaky. If the pastry browns too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil. For best results, shred your own cheese to avoid anti-caking agents. You can freeze unbaked mummies and bake from frozen, adding a few minutes to the cook time.
