Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-process)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (85g) white chocolate chips or melting wafers
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • Optional: 2-3 drops black food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a 2-inch overhang on two opposite sides.
  2. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Remove from heat and stir in granulated sugar until glossy. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, whisking vigorously after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, folding gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in semi-sweet chocolate chips. Reserve ¼ cup to sprinkle on top if desired.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Tap pan on counter to release air bubbles. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack (at least 2 hours).
  9. For the spider web topping: Place white chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
  10. Transfer melted white chocolate to a piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip off a tiny corner.
  11. Pipe concentric circles on top of cooled brownies, starting from the center and spacing about 1 inch apart.
  12. Using a toothpick or skewer, drag lines from the center outward through all circles to create a web pattern. Wipe toothpick clean between each drag.
  13. Let white chocolate set completely (about 30 minutes at room temperature or 15 minutes in the fridge). Lift brownies out using parchment overhangs and cut into squares.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature eggs and let brownies cool completely before piping the web. If white chocolate seizes, add a teaspoon of coconut oil and stir vigorously. Brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
