This brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is a quick and easy copycat coffee shop drink that tastes like a warm hug in a glass. Made with simple ingredients, it’s creamy, caramel-like, and perfect for cozy mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots of espresso (about 2 ounces or 60 ml)
  • 1.5 tablespoons brown sugar (packed, about 20 grams)
  • 1/2 cup oatmilk (about 120 ml)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: a pinch of cinnamon
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso: Start by pulling two shots of espresso (about 2 ounces or 60 ml total). If using a Moka pot, brew on the stovetop until you have about 2 ounces of strong coffee. If using an Aeropress, use the inverted method for the strongest brew. The espresso needs to be hot when it hits the sugar.
  2. Add the brown sugar to your shaker or mason jar: Measure out 1.5 tablespoons of packed brown sugar and drop it into the bottom of your shaker. Make sure it’s a clean, dry container before you add anything else.
  3. Pour the hot espresso over the sugar: Immediately after brewing, pour the hot espresso directly onto the brown sugar. The heat is crucial—it helps dissolve the sugar completely. Stir it briefly with a small spoon to make sure the sugar starts melting into the coffee. You should see the mixture turn a beautiful caramel color.
  4. Add ice and shake: Fill your shaker or mason jar with ice cubes (about 5-6 large cubes). Put the lid on tight and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. The shaking aerates the espresso and creates a lovely frothy texture on top.
  5. Pour into a glass: Pour the shaken espresso mixture into your serving glass, ice and all. You’ll notice a beautiful layer of foam on top from the shaking.
  6. Add the oatmilk: Slowly pour 1/2 cup (120 ml) of oatmilk over the back of a spoon into the glass. This helps create a nice layered effect if you’re using a clear glass.
  7. Stir gently: Give it a gentle stir with a spoon to combine everything. You don’t want to stir too aggressively or you’ll lose the foam. Just a few gentle swirls will do.
  8. Optional: add a pinch of cinnamon on top: This is my favorite finishing touch. The cinnamon adds a warm, cozy aroma that makes the whole experience feel even more special.

Notes

The espresso must be hot when poured over the brown sugar to ensure it dissolves completely. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds for the best foam. Use large ice cubes to prevent watering down. Let oatmilk sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before using to avoid temperature shock that collapses the foam. This drink is best enjoyed immediately.
