A refreshing, crowd-pleasing punch combining mint julep and sweet tea flavors, perfect for summer parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 black tea bags (preferably Twinings Earl Grey)
  • 8 cups (1.9 liters) filtered water
  • 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves
  • 2 cups (480 ml) bourbon whiskey (recommended Maker’s Mark)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • Crushed ice (to fill the punch bowl)
  • Lemon slices (for garnish)
  • Extra mint sprigs (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Bring 8 cups (1.9 liters) of filtered water to a boil. Remove from heat and steep 6 black tea bags for about 7 minutes. Cover the pot to trap steam and flavors.
  2. Remove the tea bags gently, squeezing out excess liquid with a spoon to avoid bitterness.
  3. While the tea is still warm, stir in 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar until fully dissolved. Let the tea cool to room temperature or refrigerate to speed cooling.
  4. Place 1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves in the punch bowl. Gently muddle the leaves with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon to release aroma without pulverizing.
  5. Pour the cooled sweet tea into the punch bowl over the muddled mint. Add 2 cups (480 ml) bourbon whiskey and stir gently but thoroughly with a long-handled spoon.
  6. Add 1/4 cup (60 ml) fresh lemon juice and give a final stir.
  7. Fill the punch bowl with plenty of crushed ice to keep the punch cold without diluting flavors.
  8. Garnish with lemon slices and extra mint sprigs. Serve immediately with long-handled ladles and glasses filled with ice.

Notes

Do not over-muddle the mint to avoid bitterness. Use quality bourbon for best flavor. Sweeten the tea while warm to dissolve sugar fully. Fresh lemon juice is essential for brightness. Chill punch bowl and glasses if possible to keep punch cold longer. Prepare tea base ahead and add bourbon and lemon just before serving for freshness.
